Personal Vision

My personal vision for the world is one in which people focus internally and shine externally. Eliminating fat-talk is key. I share this because it is THAT important to me. It is what I hope for everyday.

It's time to come clean and admit it. I am a fat-talk free zone. I do not count calories, nor am I interested in hearing you talk about yours. I do not weigh myself, nor do I care what you weigh now, what you used to weigh, or what you want to weigh. You can look through my closet to find clothing sizes, but those numbers are of no value to me, and neither are your numbers. I am not on a diet and choose to remain far removed from that world. I am not perfect and would rather make loads of mistakes than expend energy trying to be perfect. I don't need you to be perfect either. I prefer you off-kilter and real. I exercise for joy and not to make-up for anything I ate, and if we exercise together, I hope you are smiling too. I don't know how many calories are in your meal, and I beg you to stop counting and be present with me instead. I know the look, when you are far away doing your math. Come back, it's way more fun in the land of the now. I never need to be any more or less than what I am to be happy, and if I could make one wish come true, it would be that you realize that as well. You are not fat, and fat is not a feeling. You are not thin, and thin is not a feeling. You are you, that is enough for me, it can be enough for you too. Your scale will never, no matter how many times per day you ask, tell you what you want to hear. Throw away the scale. I am being completely serious. How will you know how you are doing? Ask yourself. How will you prevent yourself from letting go? Let go. You will be taken places your scale could never have taken you. Write your scale a hate letter. And then write yourself a love letter.

I am not joking around. I ask for new conversations. The kind filled with truths about what is going on inside, rather than how you are controlling the outside. The kind filled with hopes, dreams, problems, and solutions. I will listen to your struggles as you listen to mine, but I will not allow you to berate or bully yourself. I will listen to your issues with food and weight, but I will encourage you to dig deeper and get to the roots of the issues, rather than perpetuating them. I do this because I love you and believe in you.

I have lost friends over this. Friends not ready to give up the fat-talk, not ready to stop reporting their diets and weight loss as the big news of the day, not ready for new conversations. I hope these friends return one day, with a smile and big pile of diet books for recycling. I don't want to lose you, and so I hope we can have new conversations. My vision for all women is to start having new conversations. Can you imagine what a world we could create if all the time and money spent on counting is applied to creative ventures? Incredible vision.

This is my vision. A world in which people focus internally and shine externally. And a world without fat-talk. That is the space I hold in my heart for all women and men, girls and boys.

Go for one day without the fat-talk. Then try one more day. Keep practicing. Then jump, fly, and soar to distance lands. It's well worth it.

Shine on!
